We’re all had the experience where the phone rings, we look down at the caller ID and we don’t recognize the number listed at all. Sometimes it is an 800 number and other times it is from a familiar area code but the main number is completely unrecognizable. Although it was acceptable at one point to just pick up the phone and see who it was and go from there, that is not always the case anymore. If you have gotten repeated calls from an unknown number it is a great idea to look up the number online and see what it is if you can. There are a number of phone scams that can happen without even knowing you are being a victim. They are called phone phishing and they can be financially devastating if you aren’t careful.
Look up the number that has called online and see what results you find. There will be phone phishing reporting sites that have results of the phone number that you post and you will be able to see from other posters who the caller is and what they want most times. It is a good way to determine if the call you received is nothing more than an innocent inquiry, about a bill you legitimately have to pay, or something else entirely.
While it may seem like a bit much, it is a good idea to adopt this practice regularly with unknown phone numbers. It is better to be safe than sorry and with the number of scams going on, it is a good idea to make sure you are not about to turn over information to someone who has ill will towards you. This is especially the case if you are planning on giving any sort of financial information out over the phone. That is a dangerous thing to do from a number and company you are not completely certain of doing business with.
